This New Year’s Eve not only marks the beginning of a new year, but also a new decade — which calls for double the fun and double the bubbly! What better place to sip champagne and ring in 2010 than Paris? No matter your age or interests, the City of Lights offers something for everyone.
The nucleus of Paris’ New Year’s Eve celebrations is certainly the Champs-Élysées, which closes off traffic to accommodate the revelers. Starting around 9:00 p.m., the illuminated avenue fills with partygoers toting champagne bottles and plastic flutes. When the clock strikes midnight, all eyes are on the Eiffel Tower for a glittering light show. You can also join in the public festivities on the steps of Sacre Coeur, atop the Butte de Montmartre in the 18th arrondissement. As one of the highest points in the city, the steps provide a magnificent view of Paris, including the Eiffel Tower on a clear night. From atop this perch, you’ll also be able to see the amateur fireworks being set off across the city. The Montmartre neighborhood (18th arrondissement) brims with bars and cabarets, including the famous Moulin Rouge, to continue the revelry well into the night. If you fall for the charm of the area, like so many others did, consider renting an apartment in the 18th arrondissement to enjoy the unique atmosphere enveloping Montmartre.
If you’re traveling with children, consider celebrating the evening at Disneyland Paris. From November 8-January 6, the park is transformed into a holiday wonderland, with more than a million Christmas lights, an enormous tree, and cascades of snowflakes falling on “Main Street, U.S.A.” At midnight on New Year’s Eve, a magical fireworks display lights up Sleeping Beauty’s Castle.
