June 23 distinguishes itself for being not only the eve of celebration before the Feast of Saint John the Baptist, but also for being very close to the June solstice, which typically falls on June 21 and is the shortest night of the year. Although their origin remains a mystery, bonfires are still the most common ritual all over France for the “Fête de la Saint Jean”, and Provence is no exception.
Aix-en-Provence is one of the major centers in the South of France where people get to experience fully the arrival of the flame, the blessing of the flame, the firing up of the bonfire and the numerous ensuing festivities, in which everybody is welcome to partake. But by all means, do not let all the fun distract you from exploring one of the most beautiful cities in France.
Further down South, Aubagne is another location famous for its respect of the traditional celebration, and its bonfire on the main square, along with the local folk dances and concerts, are not to be missed if you’re around. dating back to the 11th century, the old town is worth a detour by itself, so make sure to check it out once the revelry has died down.
Further up North, Les Baux de Provence also observes the “Fête de la Saint Jean” with musical performances all over town before a giant paëlla brings everybody together for more joyful merriment. Les Baux has much more to offer than just a single evening of partying though, and you should not miss taking in the breathtaking panorama over Arles and the Camargue area, or the 22 buildings officially listed as historic treasures.
