Its formidable stronghold Popes’ Palace overlooks the wide expanse of the Rhone River plain and the encircled city. This large island formerly was a refuge for outlaws and deserters in the past centuries. The exceptional view over the city is best admired at sunset; many paintings and etchings have been made of it.
