Avignon -also known as the Popes’ city- has a wealthy historical and artistic heritage. Its formidable stronghold Popes’ Palace overlooks the wide expanse of the Rhone River plain and the encircled city. If you want to see one of the most beautiful views of Avignon and its famous uncompleted bridge, you should go the island of Barthelasse. This large island formerly was a refuge for outlaws and deserters in the past centuries. The exceptional view over the city is best admired at sunset; many paintings and etchings have been made of it.
An Internet connection is available.
The closest expressway is the A9, exit Remoulins, 15 minutes drive away, or the A7 exit Avignon North or South. The A9 goes from the Spanish border to Orange. The A7 binds the Italian border to Lyon with connections for all major cities of the south east of France. Avignon train station is served by the TGV (Train Grande Vitesse) that goes to Paris in 2 hours and 40 minutes! The closest airport is in Avignon as well with 4 daily domestic flights from/to Paris. Most international connections are made through the international airports of Marseille-Marignane or Paris-Charles de Gaulle.

The Avignon flat I rented for 4 nights was superb at every level, and even better than the photos and specifications on the website suggested. Everything was comfortable, clean and well equipped, the terrace and views were magnificent, and the owner was very helpful (she went out of her way to ensure the wifi connection, damaged by a previous tenant, was repaired for me when she realized it was important for my work). The only fault was that the heating, while being a good quality apparatus, was perhaps a little light for a winter night. I understand that in the South of France it is usually warm. |
