Description
3 Bedroom Vacation Rental in Earls Court, South Kensington (LN-374)
3 Bedrooms, 1 Bathroom, 1 Half Bathroom - Sleeps 5

This three bedroom rental is located on Earls Court Gardens off Earls Court Road in the borough of Kensington & Chelsea in central London. It is on the 1st and 2nd floor of a converted period townhouse with no elevator. The upstairs maisonette is carpeted throughout with the exception of the kitchen, bathroom, and cloakroom which has parquet flooring.  This maisonette has a homely traditional period charm which is reflected in the décor and furnishings.

The living room is furnished with neutral coloured (pastel shade) wall paper, with an assortment of armchairs and sofas facing the cable TV. The dining room, with a table for 6 and a stereo, is great for enjoying your home-cooked meals and has a serving hatch so food can be passed directly through from the kitchen piping hot. Crockery and cutlery are provided. The kitchen is well-equipped with an oven, gas stove, microwave, fridge/freezer, coffee machine, washing machine, and toaster. There is also an extractor hood directly above the gas hobs on the cooker ensuring strong cooking smells do not spread beyond the kitchen inconveniencing other people. There is also a fibre optic connection to the Internet with 200mb download, a HiFi System and Q Acoustic speakers.

The master bedroom is furnished with two single beds that can be brought together to make a king size bed, a dresser topped by a mirror and a chest of drawers, as well as fitted cupboards. Additionally there is a Philips midi music system in the Master BedroomA music system in the bedroom is a great asset providing music and news programs at night prior to sleep and on waking to catch up with the world. The 2nd bedroom has two single beds capable of being brought together to make a king size bed and is also furnished with fitted cupboards for storage, a desk and a mirror. In the 3rd bedroom you'll find a single divan bed, a small wardrobe and a dressing table with mirror. The bathroom has a bath, a wall-mounted shower, a washbasin, a toilet, a bidet, and is conveniently situated on the landing between the first and second floors. A separate WC is available downstairs.

A single folding camping bed can be brought in temporarily if required and is typically installed in the dining room. There is an ancillary charge for this item.

The Earls Court area around this London rental is teeming with restaurants, bars, and grocery stores, with two supermarkets within easy walking distance. The maisonette is also conveniently close to Hyde Park and the museums around South Kensington such as the Natural History Museum and the Science Museum. There is a gym in nearby Kenway Road; as well as another a short bus ride away in Kensington High Street for those needing a daily workout. A branch of the PAUL French bakery chain has opened nearby, also at the end of the street, selling delicious French bread, cakes and sandwiches - so no excuse not to have fresh croissants with your morning coffee!

The nearest underground station to this 3 bedroom rental is Earl's Court which is extremely convenient and approximately 2 minutes away on foot. The underground line serves the District and Piccadilly lines.

FRENCH is also spoken.

Please note:  Although the maisonette is situated opposite the local underground, it is separated from it by a high wall. The subway is barely audible from the maisonette and it does not operate between 1:00am and 5:30am and there is a choice of a rear-facing garden double-bedroom or front-facing bedrooms.

UPDATE: Front facing bedrooms now have modern snug fitting windows with acoustic suppressant glass whereas the rear facing bedroom has double glazed windows reducing outside noise. In addition a new development opposite has the added benefit of deflecting noise from the underground which, previously, had been disclosed by some as shown in reviews from previous years.

Perfect rental, old typical house located in the heart of London. The proximity of the metro is not a problem, on the contrary, all the sites are very easy to reach and the district is lively (restaurants, supermarket, exchange office, caf??, pub, etc.). Large apartment, on 2 floors. We were 2 adults and 3 children. Very pleasant, kind and discreet owner. Recommended.

To put it plainly, we got what we paid for. It was the most economical choice, but the apartment needs a lot of work. Very dated and in need of upkeep and repairs. The pictures don't quite show the degraded levels in the furniture, carpeting, walls, kitchen and bathrooms. The single bed in the small room was not usable at all.

I had a very good time in this vacation rental. The landlady was very welcoming and nice, and gave us some sound advice! The apartment is clean, much like bed linen, bed and household linen! Next to subway? a great success! The noise coming from the subway was somewhat disturbing on the first night but the landlady told us about it, which is very honorable! We would recommend it and if we had to come back in London, we would certainly rent this apartment again!

The apartment is as in photos at site. Very comfy beds with good linen. The sound of metro does not bothered much, the second night already we didn't notice any noise.
We were fully satisfied.

Our stay was wonderful. A nice house in a leafy street. A very quiet, spacious and bright apartment, very comfortable and well-equipped. And a charming, discreet and very generous landlady who speaks French. In short, the perfect rental in a central location, which allowed us to visit many landmarks in London. An excellent place to stay!

We stayed in September 2014. Overall we would recommend staying and would stay again based on the size and value.
The owner is easy to work with and made sure we had access and knew how to work the sundry appliances. She promptly returned our deposit.
The apartment is great for a family, providing three bedrooms, one with two single beds. It is also nice having a full kitchen and washer/dryer available although we had difficulty getting clothes dry. Probably just our lack of understanding of the settings.
The location is a convenient 15 minute tube ride from the central London attractions. Neighborhood stores and restaurants provide convenient access to most anything you might want close.
The apartment is well cared for and clean when we arrived. The one comment is that much of the apartment is due for an upgrade making it clean but worn. For us, not a big deal as we spent little time beyond nights and some meals.
TV and wifi provided and easy to use.
The location is near the train station, but not too near. Some train noise can be evident in the front bedrooms but not obnoxious if you are used to city life at all.

I was pleased to hear that the tenants were content overall with their choice of apartment (and I appreciated their kind sentiment).
- When tenants move in I always ensure to take them round and give a brief 'run-through' of how things work (and the washing machine also has an operating instructions guide to hand in the apartment).
- Whereas there are signs of normal wear in some places, it does not warrant complete replacement at this time.
- If breakage occurs during the let or if items are in clear need of repair, or replacement, then this is usually handled promptly.
- It is normal for there to be occasional signs wear in a property that is let to people.
- Currently, I'm looking to replace the carpet in the Lounge / Dining Room in the coming year.

My family had a wonderful time in London and were thrilled with our apartment that we rented. It was very spacious and the rooms and furniture were as depicted in the online photos. We were pleased to have both a full bathroom and a powder room, and to have a full kitchen and clothes washer. The Wi-Fi worked well, the television had many channels. Two of the rooms are very spacious, and the third bedroom, while small, had great storage and a dressing table and was very charming. It is only minutes from the Earl's Court Tube stop, providing access to both the District and Picadilly lines and being centrally located. This became our home away from home and when we weren't out sight-seeing, we comfortably cooked meals, played games, watched TV or stayed in touch with family and friends through the Wi-Fi. The kitchen was well equipped with dishes, etc. but not surprisingly, had no basic staples like margarine, spices, etc so if you're planning on cooking, you need to buy or bring with you. The unit was clean, and relatively quiet. Very minor sound could be heard - more of a muffled rhythmic rumble, that often sounded like a strong wind - from the passing of the trains for the district line nearby, and the noise from the television in the unit below would be regularly heard, but never late into the evening. So although we rated "quiet" as a 4 star, this was never a serious issue for us and would not affect our decision to return.

Although there was minimal contact with the owner leading up to our arrival, she was very engaging, friendly and informative when we arrived. She offered to sit with us to answer any questions we had, and offered suggestions for the types of places we wanted (restaurants, groceries, shopping) and recommended bus routes to help us get around. I would have no hesitation recommending this apartment to others and would definitely return to this unit if I went back to London. The size and comfort of the unit, with central proximity and the delightful owner made it a truly wonderful experience.

Sorry to hear this delightfull family, would like to have had margerine and spices (but there was only 'salt' because any 'spices' had
disappeared)! The comments are 'great', and might even act as a reference? I'm also pleased they said the sound of a television; would not prevent them from returning to rent the apartment again (and were also good enough to point out that it did not continue late into the evening).

Very big apartment, ideal location close to the subway yet without the noise being an issue. Spotless, ironed sheet, great welcome from the hostess.
Could be improved: the supply and cleanliness of tableware.

Answer by: Accommodation Owner
Aug 05 2014

The previous tenants had moved out of the apartment leaving it in a good, clean condition; and a full cleaning is still carried out on each occasion (however I would not normally inspect each single item of crockery under those circumstances). The table in the Dining Room can seat six people and there are six matching tableware settings (including two different crockery sets). I am pleased that the tenants were happy overall renting the apartment and had a positive time in London.

Great neighborhood location near Earl's Court tube station. Very spacious for the four of us, made to sleep five. Charming landlord who lives in unit below. Carpet and furniture are old and somewhat worn, but we expected this per some other reviews. Would stay here again without question.

* It's families like this that make all the effort worthwhile!
* The carpet is showing some localised signs of wear (in 2 areas that I am aware of); and I am looking to replace them in 2015.
* There are also 2 items of furniture covering that are slightly frayed in specific areas, but like the carpet, are not sufficient to justify total replacement at this time.
* I am very pleased that they enjoyed renting the apartment.

Rundown apartment. Great location. Friendly owner. Incessant noise from the tube which clickety- clacked every minute or two.

Answer by: Accommodation Owner
Jul 02 2014

* Although there is always room to do better, there have been several recent improvements such as installing a new boiler heating system; replacing the previous trellis fence with a new one as well as repainting and renovating the entire front of the house.
* Care is also taken to plant flowers in the troughs outside to make it more welcoming.
* On the inside, a replacement crockery set along with a new coffee percolator and new steak knives were also put into the apartment.
* Modern snug-fitting windows, with acoustic glass, are installed in the bedrooms (and I believe there is also a WEBfeature displaying the location of the apartment directly in relation to the local transport links).
* London is a densely built-up city and some sound from traffic generally is unavoidable; however I believe that reasonable steps have been taken to reduce it to a minimum.
* Happily, there are people who choose to return each year to rent the apartment.

We had a lovely stay. The apartment was extremely spacious, comfortable and clean. Everything that we needed was there. The land lady was very friendly and helpful. She was very easy to deal with and addressed any questions right away.

The only reason I gave a 4/5 for the apartment was the entry was smelled a little musty and the carpet is a little worn. But we did not have any issues with that. There was a little bit of noise from the subway but did not disturb us at all.

Would not hesitate to recommend this apartment or the landlady at all. Would rate our stay at a 5/5!!

Oct 09 2013

Thank you. The daily coming and going of people in the house does not permit the build up of stale air or mustiness in the hallway (or entry) which receives fresh air from outside whenever the front door is opened for people to enter or leave the property. People coming in via the front door and moving along the hallway (to go up to the apartment) mean that the air is regularly circulated so as not to become stale for want of adequate ventilation.

The hallway carpeting is cleaned along with the apartment The carpet are due to be cleaned (professionally) early next year; however they do not yet merit being replaced.

The location was perfect and the host was wonderful. This apartment is nicely located right by the Earls Court tube station and we could access everything in London within a 15-30 minute tube ride. Its also a snap to get to via the tube from Heathrow because Earls Court is one of the few tube stations with elevators to make moving luggage to and from the station possible without throwing out your back on an escalator.

The apartment was clean and spacious and exactly as it is pictured on the website. It's not the new 'Americanized" type of furnishings you see in many short term lets, but has a great British feel to it and was clean and everything functioned properly. There is a Sainsburys at the end of the street for groceries and a number of quick food options like Gregg and McDonalds right there and a Boots drug store as well.

The only slight downside is the proximity to the tube line itself and the fact that there is a certain amount of noise that eminates from the location - the windows seal out the noise well so it's not that big of a problem - we live in a rural area so we were probably more sensitive than most to the noise.

We would definitely stay in this location again and would recommend to others coming to the area.

Aug 16 2013

It's lovely to hear Kimberley was happy with the apt (its location and amenities)! The 2 bedrooms that give onto the street recently had new snugly fitting windows installed (with acoustic glass and this has been successful in reducing sound coming from outside although there is still some as the house is situated in a large city).

I believe that underground trains (which run sheltered behind houses on the opposite side of the street stop running between approximately 1 and 5.30AM) do not operate 24 hours but I am very glad that you were pleased!

Charming and very hospitable hostess. Typically English accommodation, with matching colors and decorations. Equipment is a bit old but fine and sufficient. Subway can be heard in the bedroom on the street side but is acceptable with closed windows.

Otherwise a very nice, quiet neighborhood, and very well served by public transportation.

Answer by: Accommodation Owner
Jul 04 2013

Dear Isabelle, Quality appliances and utensils are supplied because they effectively last longer and, apart from the coffee machine, always use white (they are replaced when necessary).

The subway does not operate between 1:00am - 5:30am; and there's the choice of a rear-facing garden double-bedroom or front-facing bedrooms (with specialized acoustic glass); and, in common with apartments in big cities generally, it's possible there may be some noise occasionally.

Kind Regards, Adrienne

We were 5 friends and this vacation rental was perfect from all points of view: location, comfort, services, peace and quiet, entertainment. Earl's Court underground station is not even a 30-second walk from the vacation rental and we reached the city center and all the tourist attractions in only 10 minutes.

Supermarkets next to the underground station: an organic supermarket where we bought top quality fresh food (fruit, vegetables, meat etc.) and another cheaper one next to it for packed and canned food.

The hostess, Adrienne, is fantastic: very kind and helpful. When we arrived, I asked for drinking water, but Adrienne didn't have any at the time (she told me that the tap water is drinkable) and the next day I found a 5 liter water bottle on my doorstep! Very kind!

We were 5: a couple and 3 single people (2 women and one man), so the accommodation was perfect with the 3 rooms (double bedroom, twin- and single bedrooms).

The house is genuine British style. Do not expect a 4-star accommodation, the house is rather dated and so are the utensils, the electric appliances and the furniture, too (including the bathrooms). Exactly as shown on the photos.

The second bathroom is really tiny but for us, as we were 5, it was essential to shorten our preparation time in the morning. The only 2 things we feel we should suggest to improve the service are the carpet's bad smell in the entrance and the white curtain on the bathroom glass door which you can see through.

Maybe for a question of privacy, especially when you're not all members of the same family, it would be better to change the door for one without glass or at least to change the white curtain on the door for a dark one.

Highly recommended!

Answer by: Accommodation Owner
Aug 13 2013

Thank you Francesca. I do try to make the apartment a comfortable, traditionally furnished, 'home away from home' I am pleased to say the front facade of the house has recently undergone renovation and painting redecoration, and whereas appliances are not new, they are within normal lifespan.

In rented property appliances and furnishings will be in used condition because of usage by previous tenants. I have also added some items including a new set of steak knives a new crockery set a new WiFi Internet router giving improved coverage a flat screen TV some additional new sheets and towels new stretch coverings for chairs new replacement windows for both front bedrooms and a completely new boiler system.

A new front trellis is also foreseen in the near future. The apartment has a second WC but not a 'Second Bathroom'; it's also visited and inspected regularly by more than one person (and there are no "smells" that we are aware of).

The glass panel in the bathroom door is rippled to obscure the image of people inside; and there is an opaque curtain behind the door as well as a shower-curtain. I have also hung a thicker door-curtain over the existing one for good measure.

It's regrettable, they weren't happy on this occasion (and can understand how there may have been some dust, since the next door neighbour was having his house renovated, and it may have come in, if windows were left open when the men were working)? Work was not done at the weekends. This was exceptional, and unfortunately outside of my control; however the important kitchen and bathroom areas were specifically excluded from the comments.

The condition of rugs was mentioned, but there are no rugs in the apartment.

The apartment is always cleaned directly after tenants move out, and then cleaned again before new tenants move in if there has been any length of time in between lettings. The carpet, in family-used areas, is professionally cleaned every 3 months or so, and again manually, if required in the meantime. Vacuum cleaner also available, on request, but otherwise kept downstairs out of the way. (Professional carpet cleaning is being scheduled again before Christmas.)

There's a very positive '5/5' for both the location of the apartment, and for 'noise' in the area (contrasting with someone previously who said they heard trains). Lastly, there are people who have rented the apartment previously, choosing to return to rent it on a regular basis.

Thank you for your candid review, Silvia. It is very unfortunate that the dust of the carpets and sofas in the apartment bothered and impaired your experience during your stay. New York Habitat prides itself on its regular inspections of apartments under our listings, and we will continue to meticulously do so to prevent any future occurrences like this one.

We believe that this apartment located conveniently in central London has a vintage and dated charm to it that may spark a variety of reactions from different guests depending on their preferences. New York Habitat still strongly believes that the apartment is well represented in our photos, and we ask that our perspective tenants look closely to them when considering their decision to sublet the apartment.

We hope that such occurrences will not happen again and we will work hard to prevent it.

New York Habitat discloses the apartment can sleep 6 people however the 6th guest will sleep on a fold out bed as indicated in the written description. We have made every effort to ensure that there is no further confusion regarding the number of beds available for this apartment.

We were 6 staying at the apartment and everything went well. Adrienne is charming, the apartment is clean and spacious. If we have to one comment to make, then I'd definitely mention the dishes and the kitchen equipment, old and minimal, and the noise from the subway that we could hear late in the evening.

The location is perfect and well served. I certainly recommend it.

First let me say I was pleased to read my guest commented that the apartment was clean and spacious.

The apartment is good value for the competitive rent charged so people can not expect a luxury apartment with the latest fixtures and appliances; whereas the crockery & kitchen equipment are not brand new, they are nonetheless in working order albeit purely functional.

I will also look at having double glazing fitted to the front bedroom windows as a further improvement (and am grateful for the comment).

Our stay in the apartment was pleasant, although the cleaning was not up to our expectations, especially considering the fact that we had two small children with us.

The area is great, residential and quite central for quick traveling, the earls court subway is about 50 meters away from the apartment, very important to have public transportation as near as possible. As a result, you can gather that, being so close to the station, the area is not exactly quiet.

The lady who attended to us seemed to be very nice, and despite the cleaning issue, we were impressed by the apartment as it looks typically English.

Jul 19 2012

It seems odd that this was not mentioned to me at the time; or any item named that could have been taken care of during the letting period itself given that the apartment is always cleaned immediately after people move out.

I willingly invite New York Habitat to come and reinspect the apartment to ensure its continues to meet their standards. The people renting the apartment at present have been there almost two weeks now and have voiced no such concerns to me.

Perhaps it could be more clearly highlighted that there is an 'tube-line' in relative proximity to the apartment? People could also be encouraged to do a virtual tour of the area with Google Maps, or www.multimap.com to see for themselves? I will also look at having double glazing fitted to the front bedroom windows as a further improvement (and am grateful for the comment).

New York Habitat has taken the opportunity to reinspect this apartment and was happy to find the apartment was clean and passed the NYHabitat inspection.

We also took the opportunity to renew the photographs and modify our description to say that the train passing closeby can be heard at times.

This apartment is one of the best apartment/flat rentals ever!
I have rented many times in London, NYC, Florence, Rome, Los Angeles and this really was a fantastic experience.

The apartment is RIGHT NEXT to a great tube stop so you can get straight to and from Heathrow and all over London. It is so wonderful at the end of long day running around London to be able to walk out of the tube station and be at your own door in 5 minuets.

The apartment is huge! When traveling with a group of people on a multi-city long trip it is really nice to be able to have separate rooms & a GIANT bathroom, for a budget rental in a central location in a big city. The other half bath is fantastic when there are multiple women on a trip.

There is a good sized dinning room and living room/lounge area on the main floor (2nd floor maybe but there is a small also so not sure about the exact floor numbering) with the kitchen that had everything one could need including a washer/dryer combo which we did not really figure out the drying cycles at first but I think we got the hang of it eventually. There were 3 bedrooms up on the top floor with good beds and plenty of linens.
The weather was very nice so kept the windows open a lot.

The owner met us there and explained everything about the neighborhood and helped us locate some great stores nearby and some of the best bus lines to catch nearby based on some of the museums and churches we were visiting.
She was great, very friendly and helpful the whole time and even let us check out later in the day because some of the group were heading to Heathrow & some switching to another apartment across London and she was so accommodating and came up chatted with us before we left and gave me my deposit right then no issues even through during our stay one of the window hangings had broken when we open the drapes.

There was curtains/drapes on the windows which was great for at night or in the early morning but one time when we were opening a set the rod came loose from the wall bent completely down and there was nothing we could do and she had her son take a part of them down and told us they were very heavy & it was normal wear since they had been up a long time not to worry but we did worry a little and I had figured it might cause a problem or be taken from the deposit but she was reasonable and knew that is was not our fault and that stuff is normal.

They had recently made WiFi available for renters and there was a little wireless device that came with instructions and it worked really well and worked with all of our stuff- ipod touches, iphones, blackberries, netbook, mac book, tablet and it was easy enough for me to figure out and I am not great with technology so I was very happy with that part.

Will definitely rent there again and especially with a group as it fit us 4 easily and I think even 6 would be very comfortable. THANKS!

Overall, this apartment was in a great location, accessible to many tube lines and was in a safe and excellent neighborhood with close proximity to shops, restaurants, and pubs.

The owner was very pleasant, however, there was an overwhelming smell of cat urine in the hallway leading up to the apartment and in the kitchen area. This made it difficult to enter the apartment and spend time in the kitchen.

Aside from this issue, which should be easily rectifiable, I would recommend the location and accomodations of this apartment.

I am in the process of looking at carpets for the hall & stairs leading to the flat, but was not envisaging the change intil late Summer(August), as work is foreseen for renovation to the front of the house, which will invite dust (I am also somewhat surprised, since the previous tenants made no mention of any smells anywhere)

We visited the apartment further to this review and didn't detect any smell at that time, but after investigating, it seems it is possible that the bleach used for cleaning may have a strong odour shortly after cleaning.

The house is in an excellent position, near to the Earl's Court Station of the Underground and near banks, supermarkets and many restaurants.

The owner has been nice and available. The house is great and spacious but also very, very old and dirty, particularly the kitchen, the glasses, the dishes and curtains. In the house there's the old and stained carpet, but there isn't a vacuum cleaner or a way to clean it. For two nights in my bedroom it was raining water, probably due to a leak from the roof.

Answer by: London Customer Service
Nov 17 2010

Further to this review, we contacted the owner of this apartment who confirmed that the leak has been repaired. Also, a vacuum cleaner is being purchased to be at the disposal of people renting the apartment.

Owner said the lounge and hall carpets do not appear to be overly worn, but outside cleaners have been booked to give them the "deep steam treatment" for a thorough clean and she intends updating them for a change of colour early next year. Among other things, she said she may also be having a closer look at the curtains to see if they need attention.

We spent a week in London and 5 days in Paris in apartments organised by your company. For a family of 5 apartments are the best way to go and the ones we rented were great. Both were near stations, walking distance to the city etc. No complaints at all but 2 comments.

1) All apartments should have a folder with instructions for equipment eg washing machines -in English -as we found in our travels no country has washing machines like ours. These folders should also have useful info about local transport, restaurants, doctors etc

2) In England we hired a car overnight and as there was a car space associated with the apartment we assumed we had a car space. Apparently not -we should have advised the owners we may want a space and then it was an additional cost. We therefore parked in the street which is not easy in London. This detail probably needs to be clarified with the owners.

Otherwise all great and we would do it this way again.

We stayed one week at [the apartment]. The whole experience was wonderful. The landlady was a delight, and very helpful. The apartment was really spacious, with high ceilings and comfortable furnishings. The large bathroom had a good shower and a large window overlooking the back garden. There was plenty of space to put things, and the kitchen oven/stove worked very well.

The [London] apartment was on a lovely residential street, right near the tube station and an active restaurant business area. There was a great supermarket a couple of minutes walk from our front door. It felt very residential and quiet, with birdsong and elegant homes, yet only a block from the lively restaurant area.

Our first day in we came on the tube from Heathrow, were introduced to the apartment by [owner], and walked over to the beautiful and fascinating Brompton Cemetery near Earls Court. Altogether it was a great location and a lovely home-away-from-home.
