Description
2 Bedroom Apartment Rental in Harlem (NY-14486)
2 Bedrooms, 1 Bathroom - Sleeps 6

Take advantage of the best of both worlds in this two bedroom apartment in lower Harlem! The brownstone building has left behind exposed brick walls and high ceilings from it's late 19th century construction, while you now have modern decor and a thoroughly renovated kitchen and bathroom. The apartment is situated near the intersection of the famous Lenox Avenue and West 123rd Street, less than a mile north of Central Park! Being on the 2nd floor put you above street level, so the living room looks accross the way to the other side of the brownstone-lined street, while the bedrooms overlook a garden area.

Inside you have an open common space, with a well appointed living room with two convertible sofabeds and a flat screen TV, as well as a dining table that can seat at least 4, and a kitchen with matching stainless steel appliances. The back wall is lined with the kitchen cabinets to stow the dishes and groceries. Speaking of storage, there are two closets off the hall, and each bedroom also has a double-doored closet! Another space hides the washing machine and dryer. The rooms are furnished with matching bedroom sets that are neutral enough for you to be able to put your own personality in the décor. The bathroom has a lovely beige tiling for easy clean-up and a nice basin sink with storage underneath.

This apartment is located on Lenox Avenue in Harlem, an area in northern Manhattan that is rich with culture and tradition. This area also enjoys a lively vibe due to the student culture at neighboring Columbia University, and there are plenty of eateries and bars for all types of tastes. Enjoy classic Southern-style cuisine at the famous Sylvia’s Soul Food Restaurant, found just over 3 blocks away. This brownstone is also only 2 blocks from the 125th Street shopping corridor, where you can find everything from H&M to grocery stores and pharmacies. For jogging or relaxing outdoors, you have the Marcus Garvey Park just a block from the building, and of course every New York visitor must take advantage of Central Park, just .7 miles (approximately 1.1 km) to the south. The 2/3 subway lines are nearby at the 125th Street subway station and include an express train that makes commuting around New York City simpler, running down the Upper West Side.

Please note that the heating system is radiator steam which can cause noises when in use during the cold season.

Overall I was impressed with the apartment, the location was excellent with easy access to subway system, restaurants and shopping.

This particular part of Harlem felt very safe, and people were friendly and helpful. We particularly liked being close to the famous Lenox Lounge and Sylvia's Restaurant. We would recommend Cafe Latte and Chez Lucien as great places to eat that are just a short walk from the apartment.

The apartment is a beautiful old brownstone, and was relatively quiet given it's location on a major street. The gentle rumble of the subway trains could be heard and felt on quiet nights, but we found this a pleasant experience which only added to the atmosphere!

Things that we felt could be improved would be a higher general standard of cleanliness - for example the skirting boards and furniture were quite dusty. The furniture and beds were comfortable, however attention to details such as the condition of linen could be improved (eg mattress covers). There were also a couple of things that would have been useful to be provided such as a can opener in the kitchen and a plunger to clear plumbing blockages.

Maintenance issues did initially arise, cable was not properly connected on arrival and the phone landline was not operational. We also had a toilet blockage that occured in the evening and could not be addressed until 12 hours later. With 6 people staying in the apartment this; as you can imagine; was quite an inconvenience.

When we received the email from the guests that there was a blockage we contacted a plumber that evening who came and repaired the plumbing the next day.

As this is a smaller residential building - there is no maintenance person onsite and, as such, some repairs must be scheduled. Unfortunately, there was a cable outage in the area when the guests arrived - cable was
called and the issue was immediately resolved.

We have taken note that there was a tear in the linens and that there may have been dust on the bedframes and have notified our cleaning person to look out for these issues.
As for can openers and miscellaneous items - we encourage our guests to contact us if there is something missing in the unit - oftentimes previous guests damage or misplace items without bringing it to our attention.

Given this, we wholeheartedly encourage our guests to contact us with any requests they may have - our building manager is always available to address guest issues and concerns.
We acknowledge that unforeseen maintenance issues may occur and that from time to time there may be items that a guest may bring to our attention that we are not aware of - this is why we greatly value our guest reviews as our primary goal is to ensure that all of our guests are as comfortable as possible.

This is a GREAT apartment! Location is excellent. Just two blocks from the 2/3 train -which means that you can be in Times Square in 12 minutes, and you are just a few stops from Yankee Stadium. And you are just 2 blocks from 125th Street in the heart of Harlem. Starbucks, Marshalls, Staples, and a plethora of dining options are literally right around the corner.
The apartment has very high ceilings (14 ft?) so you are able to feel like you can really spread out. The kitchen features granite counter-tops and every appliance, dish and utensil that you would need.

Being in New York, it is impossible to experience quiet (if you want quiet, then you should rent a house in the country!), but compared to staying in mid-town, it was definitely more peaceful. You can "feel" the 2/3 train when it passes by underneath the apartment building, but after a day you get used to it.

There was a ton of storage space in the apartment (we could have moved in for the year with all of the available space). The bedrooms are very adequate and face the back of the building (so less ambient noise).
The building manager and the owner of the apartment went above and beyond the call of duty to meet our every need. I was most impressed with their quick response and their pleasant demeanor when handling things.

I would highly recommend this apartment to anyone wishing to live like a real New Yorker!
