Greenwich Village, also referred to as West Village and located on the west side of lower Manhattan offers a great respite from the hustle and bustle of Midtown. You might have heard of it in the TV series Friends as the Village was the main setting for the show! There is no shortage of things do to and see in the area, which include:
- Washington Square Park: take a walk through this park located only one block south, have a picnic there in front of the Washington Square Arch, and visit the famous chess area located on the southwest corner. You can even start a game with the locals!
- New York University: the main campus of NYU is centered around the Washington Square Park and the many students participate to this area's lively atmosphere.
- Union Square: this historic intersection in Manhattan is located 6 blocks north and has a year-round greenmarket, where you can sample goods from local farmers. It also has several benches where you can eat the food you bought at the market and several playgrounds.
- The blue note (0.5 miles / 800m) : have dinner at this famous Jazz and Blues bar and stay for the live performance!
- Restaurants: You will find a myriad of affordable restaurants and cafés serving food from virtually every culture! There are also some well-known upscale restaurants. Famous for its pasta tasting menu, Babbo is located 0.4 miles away (550 m). Make sure to reserve a month in advance as it is one of the hardest restaurants to get a reservation at in New York! Red Bamboo on West 4th street serves excellent vegetarian soul food and organic wines.
The two closest subway stations are 8 Street / Broadway : New York University and Astor Place / 4 Avenue. They are served by lines N, R and 6 running north to upper Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx through Midtown, and south to Brooklyn all the way to Coney Island!
