About: Harlem

Harlem's boundaries are located between the Hudson and Harlem Rivers between 145th street and 96th street to the southeast and 110th street to the southwest. The neighborhood is just above Central Park. Harlem has always been known for its selection of rooms for rent because of the nearby colleges and universities, but since the neighborhood has undergone significant upgrades during the 1990's and 2000's the neighborhood has become even more popular for apartment share.

Harlem is rich in culture and includes parks and museums alongside apartment shares. Popular parks in Harlem are Central Park, Mount Morris (Marcus Garvey) Park and Riverside Park. Some of Harlem's museums include: The Museum of the City of New York, El Museo Del Barrio and the Studio Museum. Other cultural highlights include: Grant's Tomb as well as the famous Apollo Theater known for developing famous musicians.

Harlem is home to a significant number of higher education institutions including 2 large schools and many smaller schools. With all of these colleges and universities vying for housing space the demand for rooms to rent is high in Harlem. Columbia University is at the southern most edge of the west side of Harlem; know as one of the most prestigious universities in the country. Just above Columbia on the northern edge of Harlem is The City College of New York, a branch of the City University of New York or CUNY. Also in Harlem there are the smaller higher education institutions including Bank Street College of Education, The Jewish Theological Seminary, Manhattan School of Music Mount Sinai Medical and New York College of Podiatric Medicine.

Harlem has some of the highest demand for rooms to rent. With lots of schools in Harlem, and easy access to midtown and lower Manhattan via express and local subways as well as buses, Harlem is a top choice for apartment share rentals.
