The Lower East Side is located south of Houston Street and bounded by the East River. The Lower East Side primarily has tenement houses that were constructed in the 1800's as housing for immigrants coming into New York from around the world. Tenements often are well setup for apartment share because of their long layouts.
Little Italy and Chinatown are part of the Lower East Side which have retained their charm since the immigrant groups of the 1800's.
