Outside the apartment, find yourself walking the tree-lined streets of central Harlem, a neighborhood rich with history and culture, and with many conveniences for everyday living. A Laundromat, pharmacy, and grocery shop / deli are all within short walking distance. This apartment in Harlem offers good and bad points :

The good things : 1/ This nice crossing apartment is on the top floor of a two storey brown stone. 2/ Bedroom overlooking a quiet small garden. 3/ The owner explains that the street section is safer than elsewhere in the neighbourhood because Bill Clinton drives down the way to get to his office in Harlem 4/ External staircase recently repainted 5/ Sufficient domestic appliances. 5/ Entertaining manner of the owner - famous in the art world - of presenting NYC, the Broadway musicals and jazz bars.

The bad things : 1/ Dirt and poor maintenance : Rotten fruit in the kitchen cupboard ; old, thick spider webs at the bottom of the 2 bedside tables ; upon arrival 2 cm of dust under the bed ; dirty window panes ; black tile grouts in the bathroom ; unclean refrigerator and toilet seat ; unclean and dark carpet and rugs. 2/ Very old and uncomfortable sofa bed (in the living room) and bed mattress (in the bedroom) making a long stay painful for one's back. 3/ The owner eventually acknowledges that she didn't check the work of the cleaning company she asserts to have paid for a full cleaning service 4/ getting hot water on the top floor is a matter of patience. Only shower, not bath, is possible (leaks/closing plug) 5/ Walking from the subway station 125th Street (4/5/6) to the apartment is a security ordeal, especially during night hours. 6/ Rent too expensive

We have used this apartment twice now for interns and both times has been a great experience. The owner of the building is extremely helpful and great to work with

It's a very nice apartment in a great Harlem neighbourhood -- people are nice, hardly any hipsters, music and food are great. The owner, Thelma, is a fantastic host! Try it before the area gentrifies!

The apartment was great! It is very large in comparison to most NYC apartments. Also, the apartment was super-clean and all important appliances were available.

However, I have to say that the highlight of this apartment is the landlord. She is such a nice and helpful person. It was an amazing joy to meet her.

Dear Goncalo,

Thanks for the great review. Thanks for leaving the apartment as you found it and for being respectful both to me and to the other guests.

Have a very Merry Christmas, a healthy, happy and successful new year.

Thelma.
