Everything was ok, i stayed 3months in the apartment and enjoyed it. The location is good with the metro, it is a safe area if you take the subway line 2/3 you are about 20 minutes from Times square. You can find supermarkets and laundrymat nearby and the street is very quiet. It is a good apartment for the price.

It's a great place for the price. I stayed in the smallest room and it was pretty cramped, but I knew that going in and for me it was worth the cheap rent. You get to be in Harlem which is convenient and has a lot of cheap food. I only once had a problem with utilities and it was caused by my roommate, Andrew was quick to come in and fix it the same day. The common spaces are cleaned weekly and some pots and pans are provided so it's a very convenient place to live. I never saw any bugs or pests in my room which is definitely a positive. I never had any noise complaints, but to be fair I almost always had headphones on. After moving to my new place I really do better appreciate how convenient it was at this place and how helpful Andrew is.

I would recommend bringing a hand vacuum because my room got dusty a few times.
Fair warning that the nearby 56 train station is sketchy after dark, but the 23 is the same distance away and has no problems. I did have some negative encounters on Lenox but I guess that's New York. There were also plenty of nice people like the ones I met at the laundromat across the street.

If you don't like sharing with your roommates much, this is the place for you, since it's like a long-stay hostel. It's quite calm everyday, but appliances are not that good, since the basic ones are not in good condition and there is little dishware, which could be improved.
There are several people living in the building, which has two bathrooms, but the owner keeps everything clean. Location is good because it's one of the quietest areas within Harlem.
The owner doesn't live there but passes by everyday.

The room was great, everything about it, location, presentation, great. The only downside about it is the walls are thin... very thin. You can hear the neighbors and literally hear snoring in the next door. but other than that great.

The room is spacious, warm and very comfortable, especially during these winter months. The kitchen area is spread out and easily accessible. The bathroom is clean and neat, hot water is steaming from strong water pressure too.

My overall rating is not very good.

Positive factors: location- North Central Park.

Negative factors: The house is old, noisy and the heating system is obsolete. Heating is very very very noisy.

The personal contact with the landlord was horrible. He is not friendly and never cooperated in the affairs of the house.

The kitchen is old and was always dirty (there are four seats five people in the kitchen). The kitchen has few amenities and appliances are old and some are broken for a long time.

The bathroom has no heating and also taps are very old and are oxidized. It is difficult to regulate hot water.

The house has security cameras in the hallways and kitchen that makes your privacy is reduced. Furthermore, the presence of the landlord is quite uncomfortable.

Cleaning is insufficient and the floor is always dirty and sticky.

Sorry, but I do not recommend any of those rooms.

Dear Jose
I am sorry you view your stay so negatively. About some things you are correct. It is an old house but is well kept and I visit it twice a day at about 9:30 am and again at 4pm to straighten up the kitchen and bath and throw out the garbage, plus I have the cleaning person who still comes once a week and does all the common areas, bathroom, kitchens and halls. The heating system is old but very efficient but it does make occasional noises, but nothing like what you are implying.
You say that I am unfriendly but I never fail to say hello and am always polite. I do not really understand your comment and how friendly you would have liked me to be. Maybe the language barrier did not help.
As far as the security cameras go, there are no cameras in the halls, as you claim. There are only two, one in each kitchen and I had them installed after one of the roommates (the only one in 11 years) complained that he was missing some his things from there, and I installed it not so much to catch someone but as a deterrent. People tend not to do things that they are not supposed to if they think someone might see them. It makes most people feel more secure.
As far as the bathroom heat is concerned there are steam risers in both bathrooms that warm them.
Again I am sorry you feel you had such an unpleasant stay.
Respectfully, Charles

As for my experience I was satisfied with my stay although there was a big difference on the actual appearance of the room as compared to what is advertised. As for roommates everyone is friendly and easy to get along with. The owner is very detailed on do's and don't in his apartment and open for suggestions and comments. He visits the apartment frequently and check regularly things for repair and any issues.

Dear Maria
I am pleased that you had a pleasant stay and I hope you will stay with us again when you return to New York. As for the detailed rules; believe me if I did not have them, living with roommates would be chaotic and unpleasant rather than the pleasant roommate situation that you experienced.
Respectfully, Charles

'It's Harlem! Be really careful!' is all what I heard before I left for New York City. I always wanted to live in Manhattan and this was one of the best choices I had for my budget. Eventually, however, this ended up as one of the best decisions of my life. The hospitality and camaraderie was above par my expectations. Made some lively memories, wonderful friends and basically got more than I ever imagined. I will come back in a heartbeat if given a choice.

Awesome apartment, owner is there if needed but sometimes too much and quite intrusive in your everyday life. Otherwise, ideal location, not too far but not too close to downtown Manhattan.

Very quiet - the surroundings are a complete change of scene!

Thank you for your review. I am pleased that you found the house was not only conveniently located but quiet, clean and comfortable. I feel I have to be at the house for a few hours many afternoons to clean up and do repairs so that you and the others would feel that way.

I am sorry that you found it intrusive. No one else has ever said that and I thought that I was jut politely listening when you engaged me in conversation. However I will make an extra effort while I go about my chores not to seem like an overseeing presence.

Best wishes, Charles

My room was the smaller room on the 2nd floor but it was more than enough for me. The house is in a great location in Harlem! I mean literally everything you could need in four blocks or less. Dry cleaners, grocery store, train station, laundrymat! So convenient!

The bathroom situation can be..well a situation lol one bathroom one the floor, five people on the 2nd floor. But honestly it wasn't that bad, sometimes you just have to plan ahead a bit if you have somewhere to be.

Other than that there were no problems. Everyone keeps to themselves, I never had to worry about anyone eating my food and each room has an individual lock not that I felt like my stuff was in any danger.

All in all I would deff live here again and prob will when school starts back again :)

The owner of the appartment was constantly present. It was ennoying, because he limited your living space. He entered your rooms during the day. In my case he re-arranged the setup of my room, while I was living there. To me that's a disrepectful attitude towards somebodies privacy.

Thank you for your review Kevin. I am around the apartment almost everyday to clean up the sink and throw out the garbage. Regarding entering the guest's room, I entered only with permission and it was to show the room to a potential guest.

I asked the guest if I could organize the room and he agreed so I cleaned up the room before showing it as I could not have left it untidy when showing it to a potential guest.

Beautiful house in the heart of harlem, nice and warm atmosphere. downside: bed in a very bad state difficult to have a good sleep, old and badly equipped kitchen, 1 bathroom for 6.. and the owner always home!

Ideal for a very short stay, not if you want a basic level of privacy and cleanliness!

Further to this review, the owner checked with the current tenant who commented that they did not have issues with the mattress. The frame is a traditional metal bed frame. The owner has added dishware to the kitchen.

There is one bathroom that is shared with all 5 tenants of the apartment. This information is included in the apartment description. The bathrooms, kitchen and hallways are cleaned by a cleaning person who comes in once a week and whom the owner supervises.

Between these times, tenants are expected to clean after themselves, and each tenants' room is their own responsibility. The owner also does all check-ins and checkouts.

The apartment in Harlem was wonderful. The owner was always quick to assist within anything that was needed. If returning to New York, I would stay there again.
