I highly recommend it, would definitely stay there again.
The apartment is well stocked and clean, the owner comes by regularly to empty the garbage and fix any problems.
The bedroom was very spacious and even came with linens, although the bathroom is shared with the other 2 bedrooms on the floor, it is very nice and can be easily shared.
It is in a convenient area and easily accessible by subway (10 min walk from the apartment).

Apartment very well located in the heart of Harlem, within 10 minutes walking distance from two major subway lines. The room was comfortable and well furnished. The comon areas were cramped and not open to the outside, but generally clean. However, I regret that the owner was present daily in the apartment. I recommend this shared-apartment for its value for money.

I felt that the apartment was in a great location for a great price. I found the roommates always leaving large messes for periods of time and then cleaning them up. My door was difficult to lock. I wish it had a dead bolt but it was never a major issue that it didn't lock. I found the bed to be very comfortable and I was very happy with my stay.

I have since fixed the lock on the door and spoken to the other roommates about their clean up habits.

Dear Lexis,
Thank you for your review.
Unfortunately, adding locks to room/bedroom doors that prevent anyone to enter them constitutes a violation of the Certificate of Occupancy and it is punishable by law. That's why this apartment did not have proper lock on bedrooms door.
Thank you again for your feedback.
Best,

Its a good temporary living space however, the bed was uncomfortable and children's size, and also all the provided bedding was useless and too thin. there wasn't a lot of storage.
The location was great and in a very friendly neighborhood, and the landlord comes and cleans the house daily which was great as the house is shared with quite a few people.

Overall it was a good experience and I would recommend it.

Dear Isabella,
The bed is a normal size twin with a 12" thick mattress, and had you asked I would have provided a heavier quilt cover, of which I have available. Sorry you didn't think to ask.
Thank you.

I Highly enjoyed my stay at this place. My roommates were very nice and the landlord very helpful. It?s a really great neighborhood and the street is very quiet and has a lot of trees and gardens in front of the building. So the terrace invites to relax. I would definitely have stayed longer if possible...

I have known this house for 7 years: it is located in an attractive neighborhood on 130th street between Lenox Avenue and 5th Avenue. These brownstones are typical of New York City with their terraces and garden.

Hello Frederico, thank you for the feedback! I'm glad you enjoyed your stay. I'm sorry you weren't completely satisfied with the cleanliness. That is something really important to me. I have person who comes in once a week and we clean all the common areas, the bathrooms, the kitchens and the hallways and stairs. During the week I come in for a few hours almost every day and I empty the garbage and clean the stoves and wipe down the tables, wash the dishes that are left in the sink and put the cleans dishes back in their cabinets and I check the bathrooms and mop up any water that may be on the floor. Thanks for the positive feedback!

The house is located in a quiet and peaceful residential area. Away from the streets noise and traffic. There's a small garden with a porch on the ground floor where you can relax and drink coffee. The kitchen and the bathroom are big and in excellent condition. The kitchen is very well equipped with dishes, pots and pans and domestic appliances. The rooms have nice wooden floors, like everywhere else in the house. As a whole, thumbs up for the style, too, and for the tasteful decoration, thus creating an old-time atmosphere. The host is a very kind and helpful person. The common parts (kitchen and bathroom) were always perfectly clean. The bedroom that I was assigned was clean and tidy. The subway station is about a 5-minute walk and the red line 2-3 takes you everywhere in Manhattan in a few minutes. There are numerous stores and groceries in the neighborhood. Regarding safety, I never had any problem coming back even late at night.

The owner of the house is very comitted to the house, so he will let you know if you do something wrong. This is mostly a good thing, since it keeps the house organized. Biggest plusses for me were international house mates, a porch to hang out on and friendly neighbours. I would highly recommend staying here, if the location works for you!

Dear Dennis

I am glad you enjoyed your stay. I hope I wasn't too strict with the rules but it does help to have them when people room together, little things like leaving unwashed dishes can cause friction among the roommates, and I like to keep things both clean and harmonious.

No problem with the roommates but unfortunately with the owner who is there 24/7.
Much too present and intruding (goes into the bedrooms, alarm clock on sunday morning, prepares his meals in the middle of the kitchen, throws our stuff away)
The kitchen equipments are in appalling and obsolete condition. No glasses, no oven dish, absolument no kitchen comfort.
No AC and in the winter the heating is extremely noisy.

Answer by: Roommate Host
Aug 15 2014

Franchi, I am surprised by your review. I wish your complaints were voiced to me during your stay so I could have made the necessary adjustments or changes. If you would have told me about the noisy radiator, I would have fixed it immediately. Now that I know, I will fix it at the start of the coming winter. I am confused as to which alarm clock going off on Sunday you are referring to when I do not sleep in the apartment, nor do I own an alarm clock. Generally, I put in the A/C at the start of July until end of August or mid September, but have no problem putting one in upon request; Again, I wish you had told me that you wanted an A/C put in. I did enter your room, but only when you asked me to do so to pick up the rent. I am not in the apartment 24/7, but do go in most days for a few hours between 11am to 3pm, to clean up and put out the garbage. I am sorry if I threw out anything important, but I only ever discard stuff that has been left around for a period of time under the assumption that it was not longer wanted. generally, If I see something is left around the kitchen, and don't know who it belongs to and can't put it away nor can I leave it out for an extended period of time because it makes the kitchen a mess and is inconsiderate to the other roommates, then I do discard it. If this happens and you would prefer me not to, please let me know. I will however take a look at the kitchen equipment to see if it could use an upgrading. Thanks!

Quite satisfied overall. Everything is close by and well served by subway. The house is cleaned every week. The wifi is not very reliable, the furniture and the amenities are a bit dated.

Also, there's no space - no sitting room - in the house where each roommate can relax with the other roommates who share the apartment. That's the big downside of the house.

The building is a bit dated but with its own charm. Well maintained. The real problem comes from the radiators which make a noise every time they go off.

Answer by: Roommate Host
Mar 07 2013

We thank you for your review, Adyl! Since you left in August 2012, we have upgraded the internet network we had and connected an extra network which would reduce the volume of computers on the system and provide better and more dependable internet service; it seems to be working.

As for there being no sitting room, that is of course true, however, the kitchen is an eat in kitchen and if people what to hang out that is a place for them to do it. I understand that for some people that is a drawback but for others it seems to be a plus because it provides fewer contacts and more privacy while at the same time allowing for some social interaction if they are inclined.

The result is that the house is quiet and the roommates are never subject to a living room full of friends of one of the other roommates. So for some people it is minus and for others it is a plus. There is however a porch in the front of the house that is available in nice weather to all occupants in the house and is used even in not so nice whether by some. The house is well maintained.

We have a cleaning and repair man come in once a week and together we clean the kitchens, bathrooms and common areas and do whatever repairs are necessary. I am at the house almost every day. Also we have always provided clean sheets for each new roommate, however we now provide brand new sheets for each new roommate not just clean ones.

We acknowledge that the house is not ideal for everyone, you have to choose according to what is important to you.

The rental was great. Nice big room at a very good price when compared to rooms friends were renting in the area. The apartment is cleaned regularly and the landlord was good at responding to any concerns. One small issue was that the wireless internet connection in the room I was in was quite unreliable. From talking to people in other rooms, it seems like it was just because I was in the room furthest from the router.

Thank you for your kind comments Naomi. I am sorry that the wireless internet service was not responding well in the room. Now that I am aware of this, I am working to remedy the situation. I am glad that you had a nice stay despite the internet difficulties.

The place itself was nice. It was a nice apartment share with roommates from all over the world, it was extremely cosmopolitan.

As for the bathroom, some of the roommates had guests, so in the morning I often had to wait for them to have finished to have a shower whilst I did pay the rent (same on the downstairs floor, bathroom was often busy)

Cleanliness can still be improved, the issue came mainly from those who are still used to live at their mom and dad's and who eave their dirty dishes and their hair all over the bathroom.

Answer by: Roommate Host
Nov 12 2012

Sorry to hear that you had problems with bathroom access, Tianjanahary. Perhaps I could have done something to correct it had I known about the problem. As for cleanliness, you are right and that is why everyone is told when they come in that they are required to clean up after themselves. I have posted signs to remind everyone.

As for general cleaning, I have someone come in once a week and we clean all the common areas, the kitchens, the halls and the bathrooms. I check for hair left in the drains at least every other day as well as empty the garbage.

In order to avoid anyone else having these same complaints, I am having signs made to be posted on both floors saying that if they have any complaints, they must call me; otherwise, I won't be able to correct it.

This roommate share was convenient overall. However, the owner comes into the room without warning. According to other roommates, it is something quite common with this owner.

Answer by: Roommate Host
Oct 03 2012

Part of the services I provide is the cleaning of all the common areas in each apartment. I have a worker that comes in once a week to do the cleaning and other handyman type work. The roommates only have to keep their own rooms clean.

Also in the summer I provide air conditioners. They are mounted in the windows. Each room has at least one window. In the beginning of the summer, we install air conditioners in all the rooms and in the beginning of the fall we remove them. It takes two people to do the job so it has to be done when my worker is available, which means when he has time apart from his routine cleaning chores.

Sometimes I cannot give prior notice when that job will be done. I try when I can.

In this particular case when Elodie asked for the air conditioner I told her I would put it in as soon as I possibly could. Which I did but it was without specifying the particular day. She had no objection. However when I had to remove the air conditioner I did it in the same way.

We did not enter the room without warning, which we would never do, but we did enter without prior notification. We knocked to make sure we were not disturbing anyone. We have only entered when work needed to be done and when we weren't disturbing anyone.

I do not wish to minimize her complaint I recognize it as a legitimate concern.

I was three months in this appartement and I had a good time. The room was quiet, and I had a good time with the other people in the house. The street is probably the best one in Harlem, if not in NYC. Imagine to sit outside on a porch in NYC!
